Director
In 2013, NCI Director Dr. Harold Varmus appointed Dr. Staudt director of the NCI’s Center for Cancer Genomics (CCG), which aims to develop and apply genome science to better diagnose and treat cancer patients. In addition to his work overseeing CCG programs including The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), TARGET, and numerous other programs and collaborations, Dr. Staudt is also Co-Chief of the Lymphoid Malignancies Branch of the NCI’s Center for Cancer Research. As principal investigator, Dr. Staudt has pioneered the use of gene expression profiling to discover molecularly distinct cancer subtypes, and defined molecular subtypes of lymphoma based on B cell differentiation that are now considered distinct diseases.
Dr. Staudt received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1976 and his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. Following Internal Medicine training, he joined David Baltimore's laboratory at the Whitehead Institute, then established his own laboratory at the NCI in 1988. He has received several awards for his outstanding accomplishments in the field of cancer genomics, including the Dameshek Prize from the American Society of Hematology in 2009, the title of NIH Distinguished Investigator in 2011, and election to the National Academy of Sciences in 2013.
