Use in Cancer

Denosumab is approved to treat:

  • Giant cell tumor of the bone that cannot be removed by surgery. It is used in adults and in adolescents whose bones have finished growing.
  • Hypercalcemia of malignancy that got worse after treatment with bisphosphonates.

These uses are approved for the Xgeva brand of denosumab.

Denosumab is approved to prevent:

  • Broken bones and other bone problems caused by multiple myeloma or by solid tumors that have metastasized (spread) to bone. This use is approved for the Xgeva brand of denosumab.

Denosumab is also approved to increase bone mass in adults who have a high risk of breaking bones. It is used in the following types of cancer:

  • Breast cancer in women receiving aromatase inhibitor therapy.
  • Prostate cancer in men receiving androgen deprivation therapy.

These uses are approved for the Prolia brand of denosumab.

Denosumab is also being studied in the treatment of other conditions and types of cancer.
